Outreach

Outreach is our faith in action, living out Christ’s love beyond our church walls.

This ministry expresses our love and concern through focused action consistent with United Methodist Social Principles, reaching out to those in need in the local, national and world communities. A variety of projects provide opportunities for compassionate service at the same time encouraging Christian connections and relationships.

Opportunities for Ministry:

Humboldt Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC) Meals Ministry ~ Meals for the homeless in the Humboldt Park community of Chicago are prepared and served on the third Sunday of each month and on special holidays. Volunteers work in shifts to shop for the food, prepare the meal or serve the meal on site.

New Hope Community Food Pantry ~ Food items are distributed as a part of this Chicago church’s community services. Groceries are collected and delivered once a month to support the pantry.

Work Trips ~ Youth and Adult Mission trips are coordinated annually to help communities in need.  Occasionally, children will choose a project to help with as well.

Collection Drives ~ An annual winter coat drive for the needy and a Thanksgiving turkey drive for Marcy Newberry, a mission post in Chicago, is held seasonally. Emergency collections due to natural disasters are held as needed.

Crop Hunger Walk ~ A community wide event that brings awareness to the issue of local and world hunger is coordinated with other churches and held in the fall. Proceeds benefit Church World Service and our local Maine Township Food Pantry.

The Giving Tree ~ Holiday gifts for children and food baskets for families offer an opportunity to be generous during the Christmas season and support the work of HPUMC and ChildServ, helping underserved children and their families in Chicagoland.

Sunday Suppers ~ First UMC partners with local churches and other community organizations in providing a meal on Sunday evenings for the hungry. Meals are served at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic church which serves as the host site September through May.
